Comme on s'y attendait, The Revenant trône au sommet des nominations avec 12 mentions. On le retrouve bien sûr dans la catégorie du meilleur film et du meilleur réalisateur, mais aussi dans celle du meilleur acteur. Leonardo DiCaprio aura une nouvelle chance de remporter un Oscar et il est en très bonne posture pour le faire.
The Revenant est suivi de près par Mad Max: Fury Road qui récolte 10 nominations.
Fait à noter, un des films favoris de la critique, Carol du réalisateur Todd Haynes, est absent des catégories du meilleur film et du meilleur réalisateur. Cate Blanchett récolte toutefois une mention pour son rôle principal dans le long métrage.
